How to Unclog a Drain Safely (Without Damaging Your Pipes)

DIY methods that work, ones that don't, and when to call a plumber.

Not every clog needs a plumber, but the wrong DIY move can turn a simple fix into a pipe repair.

What works

A quality plunger, boiling water (on metal pipes only), enzyme drain cleaners for slow drains, and a small hand auger for hair clogs.

What doesn't

Baking soda and vinegar for real blockages — this is a myth. Chemical drain openers on older or partially clogged pipes can cause serious damage.

When to call us

If the clog returns quickly, affects multiple fixtures, or is accompanied by gurgling and sewer smells, it's a mainline issue that needs professional equipment.
