How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in a Vaughan Winter
Simple, cheap steps that dramatically reduce your risk of a burst pipe this winter.
Vaughan winters routinely dip below -20°C. That's cold enough to freeze uninsulated pipes in a few hours.
Insulate exposed pipes
Foam pipe insulation costs a few dollars per foot and slides right on. Focus on unheated basements, garages and crawl spaces.
Disconnect garden hoses
A hose left connected traps water in the sillcock, which freezes and splits the pipe inside the wall.
Keep the heat on
Even in unused rooms, keep the thermostat above 15°C. Open interior doors to help warm air circulate.
Let faucets drip
During extreme cold, a slow drip on faucets served by exterior-wall pipes prevents pressure buildup and freezing.
Add heat cable where needed
Self-regulating heat cable wraps around vulnerable pipes and turns on automatically at low temps. We install for stubborn problem areas.
Already frozen? Shut the main off first, then call us. Never use a torch on a pipe.
