10 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Plumber

Simple questions that quickly separate honest, licensed plumbers from unqualified ones.

Hiring the wrong plumber can cost you thousands. These questions weed out most bad actors in under a minute.

1. Are you licensed in Ontario?

Every plumber working on your home should hold a valid Ontario licence. Ask for the number.

2. Are you insured?

Liability insurance and WSIB coverage protect you if something goes wrong. Get proof.

3. Will you provide a firm quote before starting?

Reputable plumbers quote in writing before work begins. Avoid anyone who insists on hourly-only billing without a cap.

4. Who is doing the work?

Is it a licensed plumber or an apprentice working unsupervised? Both are fine — but you should know.

5. Do you pull permits when required?

Water heaters, backwater valves, drain relocations and gas work all need permits. Skipping them creates issues when you sell.

6. What's your workmanship guarantee?

A serious company stands behind its labour. Ask for the terms in writing.

7. How do you handle change orders?

If something is discovered mid-job, will they stop and re-quote — or just add it to the bill?

8. Can you provide references?

Recent local reviews and referrals are a great signal. Ask, and actually check.

9. Do you clean up when you're done?

Sounds obvious. Isn't always the case.

10. What payment methods do you accept?

Legitimate plumbers accept cards, e-transfer and provide invoices. Cash-only should raise a flag.
