Sump Pump Maintenance Checklist

Quick annual checks that prevent basement floods when you need the pump most.

Test the float

Pour a bucket of water into the pit — the pump should kick on within a few seconds and shut off cleanly.

Clean the intake

Remove the pump, hose off any silt on the intake screen, and clear anything in the pit.

Check the check valve

Watch that water doesn't run back into the pit after the pump shuts off.

Battery backup

Test at least twice a year. Replace batteries every 3–5 years.

Discharge line

Confirm it drains away from the foundation and isn't blocked by ice, mulch or debris.
